What’s a Splash Block?

What Does a Splash Block Do?

You know about gutters, you know about downspouts, but what’s a splash block? Splash Blocks are rectangular plastic or concrete channels that carry rainwater from the downspout away from the foundation of your home. They can be diverted to gardens or away from gardens.

We bet all this rain has got you thinking; what are they and do you need them?

Do I Need Splash Blocks?

Water isn’t going to fall heavy every time it rains. However, when it collects in your gutters and goes through the downspout, it’ll come out much harder than usual light rain.

If you have gutters installed in your home, there’s a good chance you also have downspouts. However, you might not have splash blocks. Position and placement are key when thinking about splash blocks. Most sites will downplay the importance of them and only focus on downspouts. They’re often overlooked when researching gutter installations, when they’re actually a necessity. You can further protect your garden or prevent the collection of rainwater from damaging the foundation of your house with splash blocks.

What type of splash blocks are there?

Splash blocks can come in all different shapes in sizes, they can be plastic or metal, and decorative or industrial. You can install a narrow splash block that directs water flow in a straight line or a broad based splash block to disperse water widely away from your home. Depending on your area’s rainy season, you might opt for a narrow or broad based splash block.

How are splash blocks installed?

Install splash blocks directly under each downspout in your home capable of carrying water at least 3 feet away. Always adjust them in an angle away from your home; prepare to do some digging if needed. Tip: the ideal angle is a slope of 6 inches in 10 feet. When you’ve placed your splash block in comfortable place, arrange the soil around it if necessary. Your splash block should settle with time, and rain of course.

Whether you’re putting finishing touches on your home garden or protecting your lawn and the foundation of your home, splash blocks are essential.
