Your gutters are an important structural part of your home. By effectively guiding rainwater away, they are protecting your home from damage that stems from being waterlogged and/or flooded. But it’s important to remember that a poorly maintained gutter can also be a hazard. This is why it’s important to look at gutter guards, as they defend your gutters from getting clogged with debris while still allowing rainwater to flow. One such type of guard is the micro mesh gutter guard, and it comes with its own set of advantages and disadvantages.
The Pros
Gutter guards operate by keeping debris from clogging your gutters while letting rainwater pass through unobstructed. Upon first inspection, a micro mesh gutter guard may not look like much more than a metal plate. However, a very close look will reveal thousands of tiny holes, each as small as 50 microns in diameter. As a point of reference, a single micron is equivalent to roughly 39 millionths of an inch. To put that in perspective, the human eye is unable to see anything smaller than 40 microns.
With this in mind, only the most miniscule particulates can get through a micro mesh gutter guard. This is the most obvious advantage of such a guard – incredibly fine mesh that acts as a sieve on an almost microscopic level. This comes in handy if you make it a habit to collect rainwater, as the majority of small debris will be caught by the guard. Additionally, the best micro mesh guards have a degree of flexibility, and can hold up well against normal wear and tear. And don’t forget, micro mesh gutter guards greatly reduce how much time you’ll spend cleaning your gutters, which saves you time, energy, and the worries of getting up on a ladder where accidents can occur.
The Cons
Be aware of certain drawbacks, though. While sifting manageable debris is an easy task for micro mesh gutter guards, those pieces of debris (leaves, twigs, etc.) will still need to be cleared away every so often, albeit less often than a gutter with no guard. Manufacturers recommend looking into your gutters and clearing away anything that doesn’t belong there once or twice a year. And eventually, the micro mesh may lose its effectiveness, becoming clogged. When this happens, it’s time to either powerwash the mesh clean or replace the mesh entirely.
